The chief editor of Hong Kong Economic Times showed a positive attitude to the prospects of newspaper industry in a seminar held yesterday.
The seminar was held in Hong Kong Shue Yan College. Eric Chan, the chief editor of HKET, stated that newspapers were extending their audiences with the development of free newspapers in the world-wide market. “There is a free newspapers readership of 22 million in the world nowadays,” said Chan.
The chief editor stressed that it was a challenge to handle the information to attract readers in running a media company. He said HKET was now varying the range of its products. Paid newspaper, specialized magazine and online newspaper are run in order to satisfy different needs of readers.
“Our company is going to build up a branded media product,” said Chan. He explained that HKET had to find its niche to survive in the competitive media market. HKET is planned to acquire more unique and high quality information so that it can become an authority on Economics or other sectors.
Eric claimed that maintaining the interaction between media and readers was a new concept becoming more important in the media industry. Media can publish the information directly at readers’ request so that media can concentrate on the work satisfying readers and the business cost can be lowered at a high rate.
“Vital, vocational, business, entertainment and pornography information are the contents in which most of the readers are interested,” said Chan. “More Permalinks will be provided in the online newspapers so that the news can become the value-added products and the readership can be increased.”
